چکیده

Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) are oil palm waste that has the potential as a source of bioenergy because it contains lignocellulose (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) so can be converted into biofuel through thermal cracking, adsorption, distillation processes. Thermal cracking is decomposition chemical content biomass by utilizing heat without mixture oxygen at temperature 200oC–600oC. This study aims to obtain characteristics raw material EFB in form proximate, ultimate, lignin, produced. The research was conducted using reactor designed control 300oC, 350oC, 400oC, 450oC. results showed from proximate were 13.66% water content, 8.74% ash 58.66% volatile matter 18.90% fixed carbon. relatively high. drying process on not run perfectly. ultimate result had C 54.45%, H 5.00%, O 16.27%. atomic ratio obtained analysis indicate amount calorific value used for certain fuels. smaller contained, more significant contained particular fuel. Klason method carried out decrease level lignin 4 stages; delignification resulting 24.87%, addition aquadest into18.71%, 5% HCl 15.34%, 10% 14.49%. Delignification pretreatment before cracking. forms steam; steam then condensed bio-oil. formed bio-oil kept separate tar. In order good quality, adsorption with zeolite adsorbent, which been activated HCL. A comparison physical properties after shows color difference brownish black adsorbed bio-oil, distilled heavy light fractions. 450oC close optimum; when increased, will straightforward occur optimally. produced this tested its such as, density (927-1086.68 Kg/m3), kinematic viscosity (1.17-1.43 mm2/s), flash point (66.00-70, 23oC). product dominated C5-C15 compounds (45.07%) according GC-MS analysis.

Synthesis and Characterization of Cellulose Acetate from TCF Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch Pulp

Cellulose acetate (CA) was successfully synthesized by the acetylation of TCF cellulose pulp from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) at room temperature, using acetic anhydride as the acetylating agent and acetic acid as the solvent in the presence of sulfuric acid/sodium bisulfate as catalysts. Degree of substitution (DS) was controlled by the variables of acetylation time and acetic anhydri...

Optimization of NaOH-catalyzed steam pretreatment of empty fruit bunch

BACKGROUND Empty fruit bunch (EFB) has many advantages, including its abundance, the fact that it does not require collection, and its year-round availability as a feedstock for bioethanol production. But before the significant costs incurred in ethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass can be reduced, an efficient sugar fractionation technology has to be developed. To that end, in the pr...

Conversion of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch to Biofuels

Crude palm oil production is reaching 48.99 million metric tonnes per year globally in 2011 and Southeast Asia is the main contributor, with Indonesia accounting for 48.79%, Malaysia 36.75%, and Thailand 2.96% (Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia, 2011). Oil palm is a multi-purpose plantation and it is also an intensive producer of biomass. Accompanying the production of one kg of palm oi...

Isolation, characterization and application of a cellulose-degrading strain Neurospora crassa S1 from oil palm empty fruit bunch

BACKGROUND Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) is a lignocellulosic waste produced in palm oil industry. EFB mainly consists of cellulose, hemicellulose (mainly xylan) and lignin and has a great potential to be reused. Converting EFB to fermentable sugars and value-added chemicals is a much better choice than treating EFB as waste. RESULTS A cellulase-producing strain growing on oil palm empty f...

Microstructure Modelling of Silica Bodies from Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch (OPEFB) Fibres

Investigating the mechanical behaviour of silica bodies in oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) is important to improve the process of silica body removal. This study will assist in providing an understanding of the role of OPEFB as a bioresource material for the bioconversion process. The microstructure of silica bodies/protrusions on the OPEFB fibre surface was modelled using the finite eleme...
